Using time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC), temporal resolution of less than 25 ps has been demonstrated using detectors with a fall time more than 20 times longer. Here a general scheme for guiding external markers to the TCPSC modules will be illustrated by addressing the case of getting the markers from a controller of scanning module to the TCSPC module. The markers are incorporated into the raw data according to the principles of Time Tagged Time Resolved Data Registration (TTTR) but they should be also physically “fed” to the TCSPC module. This method is useful for 3D imaging, LIDAR and is used heavily in physical measurements relying on time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC). However, to enable such functionality dedicated circuits such as time-to-digital converters (TDCs) and time-to-analogue (TAC) circuits are required.
